Intel Security has kept a close watch on the most dangerous celebrity to search online in years past to ensure consumer safety when browsing the web. Last year, comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel was the No. 1 most dangerous name to search, but this year, EDM’s very own Armin van Buuren takes the top spot. Intel Security research shows that searching for celebrities expose Internet users to computer viruses and malware.
Armin van Buuren’s search danger is accompanied by other celebrities, including Jimmy Kimmel, Luke Bryan (No. 2), Usher (No. 3), Britney Spears (No. 4), Amy Schumer (No. 5), Betty White (No. 8), Lorde (No. 9) , and Nina Dobrev (No.10).
While we don’t always think to protect ourselves from cybercriminals, it’s important that you do. Cybercriminals operate by placing malware on sites or pictures, enabling them to steal your passwords and personal information.
“With today’s busy culture and a desire for real time information, consumers often click on sites that will quickly provide them with news and entertainment, without considering safety and security implications,” said Stacey Conner, online safety expert at Intel Security. “Cybercriminals leverage this need for immediacy by encouraging people to visit unsafe sites that can steal private data.” And our community is at an extremely high risk. Conner continues, “Celebrity names combined with the terms ‘free MP4, ‘HD downloads,’ or ‘torrent’ are some of the most searched terms on the Web. When consumers search for music that is not made available through legitimate channels, they put both their digital lives and devices at risk.”
Nearly 1 in 5 Results Generated by Armin van Buuren Searches Are Links to Malicious Sites
Intel Security research found that clicking on results generated by searching for “Armin van Buuren” combined with the terms “free MP4,” “HD downloads,” or “torrent” yields almost a 1 in 5 chance of landing on a website that has tested positive for online threats, such as spyware, adware, spam, phishing, viruses and other malware.
But luckily, you can protect your computer. Access content only through official websites, don’t download videos and music from sketchy sites, use password protection on your mobiles, and don’t log into a site through a third party site. Safe searching, EDM fans!
