Michael Jackson has been a globally recognized figure in the music industry for over four decades, and he continues to be one even after his passing more than six years ago. Michael Jackson hit international stardom when he was a young boy as one of the lead singers in his family’s musical group The Jackson 5. Shortly after Jackson branched out solo, he reached the peak of his career after the release of the album, Thriller. At the initial release of the album in 1982 it perched at the No. 1 spot on music charts in the US for 37 weeks, and also spent the first 80 weeks after the release in the top 10 of 200.
Thriller was reached 20x Platinum after ruling the music charts for just two years, and Recording Industry Association of America has just released the current numbers for the album. Thriller has officially sold 30 million albums in the US, and is the best-selling album of all time at over 100 million album sales globally.Michael Jackson is also the only person to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.
“100 million albums and counting; there has never been a phenomenon like ‘Thriller,’” John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson, said in a joint statement.
“Michael opened the floodgates of his creativity, explored emotional depths and pushed the boundaries of sonic innovation. In the process, he breached destructive barriers in the music industry and literally united the world through his music: there isn’t a place on this planet that hasn’t been exhilarated by the music of Michael Jackson. Thirty years after its release, ‘Thriller’ continues to be a revelation.”
