Fashion trends are sometimes criticized for being cyclical. Where’s the creativity in recycling something that was popular five years ago? But fear not, because this season’s trend is all new and it’s demanding our attention: fishnets.

EDM lovers are no strangers to these leg accessories, but I will admit I was confused by the trend at first. Fishnet stockings are the antithesis of my fashion aesthetic; they’re brash and they’re brazen. And if you live in a cold climate, the idea of wearing fishnets in the fall probably seems silly. How can one stay warm when they’re exposing 95 percent of their leg to rain, wind, and possibly snow? But I still can’t stop thinking about fishnets, and I don’t know why.

They say no pain, no gain, right? So let’s run down exactly why you need to pick up a pair this fall.

1. They’re a statement accessory.

There’s no denying the fact that fishnets have a certain “look-at-me” quality, so take advantage of that by making them an unexpected focal point. Pair them with basics like jeans and a T-shirt to make them stand out, or swap out regular black tights for fishnets and instantly up your outfit’s grunge factor.

2. They’re versatile.

Pair them with an a-line skirt and a sweater to tone down the sweet and innocent vibes. Wear them under ripped jeans for a punk twist or try them with low-rise denim if you’re in a  IDGAF mood.

3. They’re fuss free.

By the time you’ve picked an outfit for the day, you’re exhausted. You don’t want to spend another 30 minutes accessorizing your look. So make the accessory part of the outfit instead of just an afterthought.

4. They’re cheap and accesible.

The best thing about this trend is that anyone can try it. A quick stop at your local drug store will only set you back a few dollars. Besides, what were you going to do with that 10 dollars anyway?
