Urban Outfitters might have ripped off someone’s design … again. The clothing brand is no stranger to controversy; it has been accused of ripping off multiple designers in the past and was most recently under fire for selling Halsey’s album days before its release (for the second time).
Now, the multinational clothing corporation has slowly been catching heat for potentially ripping off a design by none other than LA-based collecitive, WEDIDIT. Home to some of trap’s finest, like Groundislava, RL Grime, and Shlomo, the longstanding collective and record label has been widely known for its iconic and eye-catching tombstone design.
As noticed by WEDIDIT artist Nick Melons, the brand’s most recent collaboration with Emo Nite LA seems to be a blatant rip-off of the famous ‘BECAUSE OF U’ t-shirt, designed to promote RL Grime’s single of the same name from 2015. While Emo Nite LA has seemed to have the tombstone logo since at least January 2016, the similarities between the two t-shirts are very apparent.
Urban Outfitters x Emo Nite LA Collaboration:
RL Grime ‘BECAUSE OF U’ Design:
The collaboration between UO and Emo Nite LA is held in honor of the music/nightlife/fashion brand‘s third anniversary. But, as you can see above, it’s quite difficult to attribute the potential plagiarism to a coincidence. It will be interesting to see if, and how, Urban Outfitters and Emo Nite LA respond to the claims.
