Trigger warning: this is definitely not house music. Fans of Hotel Garuda’s first two originals, “Smoke Signals” and “Fixed On You,” are in for a surprising change of pace, as the LA via DC power duo shift from a four-to-the-floor formula to a familiar trap rhythm on “Till It Burns Out.” To be frank, when I first opened the link to this record I had to double check to make sure I was listening to Hotel Garuda and not being rickrolled by an ambitious publicist. Alas, I can assure you that it is, in fact, the newest release from the SoundCloud supergroup composed of Manilla Killa and Candle Weather.
Featuring unwavering vocals from Welsh pop artist Violet Skies, “Till It Burns Out” opens with chord stabs that immediately tip the listener off to the lack of traditional house rhythm – a feeling which is subsequently confirmed with the entrance of the first kick pattern eight seconds later. The track is filled with a low-end heavy synthesized brass sound that becomes more and more stacked as the chorus approaches, which, after a long white noise build up, is driven by the layered vocals of Violet Skies reassuring you that this song will continue “Till It Burns Out.”
It will be interesting to see if this is the new direction Manilla Killa and Candle Weather will take Hotel Garuda moving forward, but there is no question that this is a detour from the typical house originals we’ve come to expect and love. Listen to the track below, and let us know your thoughts on their new sound.
