With their superb single “Don’t Speak” currently doing the rounds, we thought it was time to talk to German duo Eastblock Bitches about their unique sound design, and what we can catch them doing next.

To kick things off, can you tell us a little about yourselves? Where are you currently based and how long have you both been seriously making music for?

We are both based in Leipzig and have both been making it for a long time. Markus started to work, release and live as a producer in 2003, and Sophie started in 2007. We both met and founded Eastblock Bitches in 2009.

What/who/where inspires you the most creatively?

We both listen a lot of different kinds of music. From house, to indie rock, to pop, to rap and sure we get a lot of inspiration from it. In the studio it’s different – we are big fans of hardware and old synthesisers. Sometimes it’s really inspiring to have old musical history in your hands.

What are your favorite parts about being artists? If you could change one thing about it, what would it be?

The best part is to be in the studio and then on the stage. To see the reaction from the crowd of the music from what you produced in your studio is invaluable. The worst part is all the travel that surrounds the shows. We still wait for the day when somebody develops a working beam system. *Beam me up Scotty*

“Don’t Speak” has just dropped, and it’s such a wickedly catchy tune. Was it one that you instantly felt worked or did you spend a while on it, perfecting it?

As we heard the vocals for the first time we immediately got into it. The time in the studio to produce the song was really quick. Normally we are perfectionists and we work for weeks on one song, but this time it was really clear what we wanted. It would be great to have always such a good workflow!

What do you feel each other brought to the track? Did you enjoy working with other on it?

Yeah, we love to work with other people. In this case we worked with M22 and they wrote the lyrics. It wasn’t the first time – we already worked with them on our single “Echo.” It’s so inspiring to work with other people, and you have the chance to find new friends.

How would you describe the single to someone who had yet to hear it?

Good feeling, summer electro bass pop.

If you could choose any artist/s to remix it, who would you pick?

Daft Punk.

What are a couple of tracks you always include in a set?

Oh that’s easy… Curbi & Mestro – “Bruh” is always in our set =)

Your most memorable experience of the year so far?

There were too many… all the big festivals gave us goosebumps.

What are you bringing to the table in the rest of 2017 in terms of releases and shows?

Our schedule is packed with shows until the end of the year and we will have one more release with our friend Niels Van Gogh! Be prepared!
