The mighty entrepreneur and walking Onion article, Fyre Festival organizer Billy McFarland, pleased his fans this week by adding up even more criminal charges against himself. According to the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, McFarland ran a phony company that sold tickets to exclusive events like the Met Gala, Coachella and Burning Man. McFarland would then put the cash from ticket sales into different bank accounts, covering his tracks.
McFarland pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud after the Fyre Festival debacle where he screwed festival attendees and staff out of thousands of dollars promising a “luxurious” new music festival unlike anything they have never seen. This, of course, was a complete and utter failure in every sense of the word.
McFarland was able to bail out of prison before trial. Usually if you are out on bail you will lay low and not bring much attention to yourself. McFarland decided to put this incredibly simple logic through a wood-chipper.
Needless to say, this did not work and McFarland has been charged with money laundering and wire fraud. What’s one more count of wire fraud anyway?
